Feeling a little bit sleepy and bloated after eating even if your food is healthy and within your diet? If your answer is yes, then you may be doing something wrong. You may be one of the thousands of people in this world who have a healthy lifestyle but practices poor eating habits.
There are three (3) simple things we do while eating that we thought is harmless.
- One of it is drinking too much water or liquid while eating. Why? Because drinking lots of water prevents the enzymes in our body to do their work. The acid secreted in our stomach breaks down the food we take so it can be absorbed by our body to give us energy. However, too much liquid will dilute the acid making it harder to digest the food.
- The second bad eating habit that almost all people are guilty of doing is drinking ice cold water. Yes, ice cold water or juice or soda. Name it. Our meal will never be complete if cold drinks are not served with it. So why was it considered as a bad habit? It is because the coldness of the drinks hold back the digestion and absorption of the food and its nutrients by narrowing the blood vessels.
- And last but not the least, is overeating and eating wrong combination of food. Overeating means, overworking the digestive mechanism of our body which will eventually lead to undigested food. Eating wrong combination of food such as starch and protein will result to indigestion and acid reflux. Foods rich in starch such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread are easier to digest while protein foods like fish, chicken, beef and eggs are harder. So when combined in the stomach, starch tends to stay a little longer before it proceed to the next digestion stage while waiting for the protein to complete its process. Thus, making us belch.
So what do you need to do to prevent these bad habits? Instead of ordering ice cold drinks, try drinking hot water or water without ice or just water in room temperature. Moreover, if you’re on for a big meal, try drinking water an hour before or after your meals. If it can’t be avoided, try to take a sip of your drinks once in a while. And for the combination of foods, eat those which can be digested easily then the protein. Again, if you can’t avoid it, just don’t overdo the starch.
If you want to avoid indigestion and bloating, just remember to refine your eating habits. Don’t drink too much, don’t eat too much. And most importantly, don’t eat too fast.
